Explore the History of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Over thirty years ago, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) created the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) to meet the growing care needs for neonates and infants during emergencies. Therefore, NRP was created to close the care gap for newborns that doctors, pediatricians, and other medical providers, had been reporting during the late 1970s and 80s.
To build the NRP program, several medical organizations and physicians came together to form training materials guiding the critical care of newborns and neonates. Over the years, these modules expanded and improved, becoming what medical providers call NRP today. The first official NRP training was held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1987.
Presently, many emergency medical certification training centers offer training programs inspired by the AAP’s NRP curriculum. That is important because the more organizations that offer training inspired by NRP, the more healthcare providers can learn the latest critical care to save neonates and infants during emergencies.
